We have not given any updates for a while. That's not due to not having anything to post as news but rather that so much has been happening that time has flown by. In February we put a new production area into service to expand our commercial custom fabrication. The new equipment and personnel will help us to serve Commercial CabinetWorks customers even better. Its a big investment with a state of the art CNC nested base router as the heart of it's process. From AWI - News Briefs

Oregon Chapter & President on a Mission

Sean McConeghy had been employed with an AWI Manufacturing Member for some time, but his attendance at the 2010 AWI Convention was his first experience beyond that. The experience was apparently life-changing because it drove him to learn about the depth of AWI and experience what a cohesive network of like-minded professional woodworkers can accomplish that they cannot achieve acting alone.

AWI Oregon Chapter Formation

At about the same time Reid Giving of Stiles Machinery approached AWI about establishing a chapter of AWI in Oregon. He gathered prominent area professionals who spearheaded the founding, growth and success of a new AWI chapter.  Mr. McConeghy stepped up to the plate when the group elected officers for their new chapter and was elected as President. Mr. McConeghy lead the first organizational meeting of a handful of industry players in January, which was followed by development of a chapter structure and formulation of all necessary chapter governance requirements. By mid-February, the group’s leaders had chartered the chapter, which obtained official status on March 17 with the approval of the AWI Board of Directors. From that time on, Oregon Chapter members have worked diligently, gathering and assimilating the basic information required of a chapter, developing guidelines for chapter activities, and conducting monthly meetings.  They have employed the AWI Adopt-a-Shop principles to support local schools, became involved in the Woodwork Career Alliance and WoodLINKS.

AWI Chapter of the Year

And, so working through the AWI chapter program guidelines, they have not only achieved “Distinguished Chapter” status, but also have gained the prestigious designation of “AWI Chapter of the Year.”  You wonder how the chapter’s remarkable growth of members, activities, and industry involvement could have come about in such a short time.  It was because one man — Sean McConeghy, whose dedication, enthusiasm and perseverance — inspired a committed team to found and nurture a healthy organization.

Twiellenmeier Award

That is why AWI has awarded its highest honor for chapter service, the “Tweillenmeier Award,” to Sean McConeghy, president of the new AWI Oregon Chapter.  This industry veteran served as the impetus for others to work together to build a success story for the good of the architectural woodwork industry in Oregon. “This prestigious award recognizes a chapter president who has exhibited superlative leadership and advanced the chapter’s mission and accomplishments,” AWI President Robert Stout said in making the presentation.  The honors took place during the 59th AWI Annual Convention in Charlotte, NC. The “Twiellenmeier Award” is named in honor of AWI Past President (1957-1958) Claude Twiellenmeier, who with his wife, Irene, founded many AWI chapters and frequently visited all association chapters.

Mr. McConeghy founded a new company with his industry partners a few months ago.  As Project Manager, Mr. McConeghy is a member of the three-person management team of Commercial CabinetWorks in Ridgefield, WA.  The company recently joined AWI as a Manufacturing Member.

WoodLINKS USA

Re: Woodworking education for High School Students

(Excerpts from flyer)

“Harvard University just released a report that calls for high schools to improve their vocational training programs because attending a four year college may not be the best choice for all students.   The study called, “Pathways to Prosperity”, states the current system of education is not adequately preparing students for the world of work.  The report also found that many young adults lack the skills and work ethic needed for today’s work environment.  The report suggests that schools should partner with industry to include more industry driven education, internships, field trips, and greater access to job related experiences while still in school.”
